Supporting Emotional Health and Wellbeing
At Helmsley Community Primary School, we are deeply committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of all our pupils and staff. We understand that life brings challenges, and at times, we all need a little extra support.
We believe that promoting positive mental health is the responsibility of the whole school community - and that every member of our team plays an important role in fostering a caring, safe, and supportive environment.
How We Promote Mental Wellbeing
We work proactively to create a mentally healthy school by:
-
Embedding our school values and nurturing a strong sense of belonging
-
Encouraging pupil voice and involving children in school decision-making
-
Celebrating both academic and personal achievements to build self-esteem
-
Giving pupils responsibility and roles to foster confidence and self-worth
-
Providing regular opportunities for personal reflection
-
Offering access to timely and appropriate support
-
Helping children understand and manage their emotions effectively
-
Teaching emotional resilience and how to cope with setbacks
-
Running a buddy and peer-mentoring system to build connection and support
-
Implementing Zones of Regulation across the school to help children identify, understand and manage their emotions
-
Offering targeted emotional support through our trained LEGO Intervention Mentor, using structured play-based approaches to support communication, confidence, and emotional expression
Wellbeing Assemblies
Each week, we hold a dedicated Wellbeing Assembly focused on emotional and social development. Topics include gratitude, friendship, resilience, online safety, emotional regulation, and self-esteem. These assemblies help reinforce positive strategies and create a space for open discussion
The Maze: Nurture at Lunchtime
Our lunchtime nurture space -The Maze - provides a calm, welcoming environment for children who may need time to talk, reflect, or just take a break. Supported by adults and peers, children can explore feelings through play-based or creative activities designed to gently encourage expression and build trust.
