Global Curriculum
Our Global Curriculum empowers children to think critically about world issues and understand the impact of their actions. Through six key themes - Social Justice and Equity; Identity and Diversity; Sustainable Development; Peace and Conflict; Human Rights; and Power and Governance - pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to engage meaningfully with global and local communities. We celebrate each child's individuality, encouraging them to value diversity and broaden their perspectives beyond our rural setting.
We implement a 2 year programme where each term we focus on one key theme.
We provide rich opportunities for the children to explore citizenship and real-life world issues, which at times they may have to grapple with to make sense of it. This, in turn, helps them to develop skills such as collaboration and communication, thus equipping them with the necessary skills for life in the 21st century.
Across each year a number of high-quality core texts are used to bring the themes and knowledge to life for our children and to promote a connectedness with the learning.
Fundamental British Values
Teaching and Promoting British Values at Helmsley CP school
At Helmsley Community Primary School, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, as outlined in the Department for Education’s 2011 Prevent Strategy.
These values are embedded across our curriculum, both explicitly and through the ‘hidden curriculum’, and are central to the ethos of our school community.
We take a developmental approach, ensuring that pupils progressively deepen their understanding of these values throughout their time with us. Through daily interactions, assemblies, classroom discussions, and wider enrichment activities, children learn what it means to be respectful, informed, and active citizens in modern Britain.
